what is a Tapered Composite Replacement Blade in a hockey stick?
Ok, lets take the terms apart and then put it back together.
A replacement blade is used to make a two-piece stick - a shaft with a blade attached - as opposed to a one-piece, which is the standard hockey stick that you buy at the store. There are benefits and drawbacks to both, and that's not important right now.
The replacement blades are inserted into the shaft and are held in place with glue. The part that goes into the shaft is called the "hosel" and there are two kinds that you can have - standard or tapered. A standard hosel is the thicker of the two, and a blade that has a standard hosel will add approximately two more inches of height. A tapered hosel, the thinner/narrower of the two, will not add as much length.
Shafts that are made for standard blades are shorter, so the length is necessary. Shafts that are made for tapered blades are made longer to make up for the smaller height of the blade. The advantage of a blade with a tapered hosel is that the smaller size (since its shorter with a smaller hosel) mean that it will add less weight to the bottom of the shaft. However, those who prefer wooden blades (as I do) will find that nearly all wooden blades use a standard hosel. Wood is a much heavier material when compared to composite, so the weight is less of an issue on those sticks. The buyer simply expects it. More on that in the next paragraph.
As far as it being composite: Hockey sticks are made of wood or a composite material, typically some sort of carbon-glass or other materials. The composite material is a lighter weight than wood and offers some advantages in the way that they allow a stick to flex, but composite isn't necessarily any more durable than wood.
When a one-piece stick is made of composite, it is possible to use a replacement blade if the original blade breaks by cutting the blade off and using a new one. Since you're cutting the stick down, of course, you'd lose some length, but you gain a usuable stick.
So, to sum it up, when you're looking at a "tapered composite replacement blade," you're talking about a new blade for a shaft that is made of a composite material with a tapered hosel.
***EDIT*** The information the other poster provides regarding kickpoint is certainly valid, though there are MANY more issues that figure in to the release of the shot, including the amount of flexibility on a stick and the technique one chooses for their shot. Further, the kickpoint actually comes from the shaft/stick. Tapered blades have nothing to do with a low kickpoint except that they are used in shafts that are engineered to have a low kickpoint.
FYI, the "kickpoint" is the area below which the shaft moves and snaps at the puck. The higher the kickpoint, the more time it takes for the shaft to move as you flex it and hit the puck. Lower kickpoint, then, means a faster release. The time saved here is negligable for many, and it really has to do with personal preference.
