How do I break in my new ice skates? Need answer!?
I'm in Gamma, My class is 30 minutes and once a week, I go to practice once a week for about one hour. I weigh 54 pounds and the skates I'm getting are Riedell 121 Blue Ribbon. Please help, I'm getting them on Friday.
Also, how do I take care of them? Thank you all who are answering, these are my first pair and I want to make them last long.
The best way to break in skates is just to skate in them. Lots of back crossovers help -- anything to get you into your knees, putting a bend in the ankles. If you have plastic guards, you can wear your skates at home to walk in them a little and even just watching TV or something. This helps them start to form to your foot and can help you identify areas you might have rubbing or pain. Get some Bunga Pads or even round makeup sponges to put in areas that are hurting. You can also put a small X in pencil on the areas that hurt -- typically ankles, baby toes, big toes -- and the skate shop should be able to "punch" them out. They have a metal tool that they can use to stretch those areas where you might need a little more room.
As for taking care of your skates, make sure you dry them off as best you can when you're done skating. Put your soakers or soft guards over your blades while they're being stored in your bag. Its a good idea to take your skates out of your bag when you get home, taking to soakers off, to allow them to dry out inside and out. This helps prevent stinky skates and rusting of blades. Never store your skates with plastic guards on. Your blades can rust overnight because they don't allow the moisture to escape. If you want to prevent scuffs, scrapes and gouges on the boots of your skates, get a pair of boot covers to wear while skating. There is also skate tape you can use for this, but I've never used it and have only heard from people who do that it leaves sticky junk behind. Also to protect your blades, use your plastic guards for any off-ice walking around you do. Don't forget to get your blades sharpened before you use them -- new ones do not come sharpened. Try to keep track of when you get them sharpened.....depending on how sharp you like your blades, they should be sharpened approximately every 20 hours on the ice.
