What do I do? Long skate laces, and skate tongue goes to the side? When to get new skates.?
My skate laces are pretty long, and I usually tie then twice, then tie it with the bow tie part, then try to stuff it into my skate, or cover it with my pants. What do I do with the long skate laces? And also, after skating for about 30 minutes the tongue of my skate goes to the side of it. It doesn't really bother me, but it's just awkward later taking off the skate to see that the tongue is to the side. Also I have Bladerunner Solstice ice skates(my first pair from modells the white looking ones) when's a good time to get new skates? I just passed ISI Alpha, and now starting in January I'm in ISI Beta. I got these first pair of skates about a month ago, I go around once a week for about 2-3 hours, roughly. I don't think my mom wants to go buy new skates right now, but when would be a good time? Thanks~
Try tying your laces in a knot, then wrapping the laces around your ankle as many times as it takes to use up as much slack as you need, then tie them in your bow...double knot to prevent them coming undone. Maybe try to keep the lace that goes around your ankle below the hooks of your boots so they don't slip up, past the top of your boot and rub against the back of your leg. That hurts!! Or check at your skate shop to see if they have shorter laces. Skate laces come in different lengths and are made of different materials. It all depends on what works for you!
Here's a good article that explains the twist. I used to have this problem with an old pair of boots and it drove me nuts cuz it would cut into my ankle and hurt.

Looking at the ISI levels (I teach USFSA levels), I'd venture a guess that you'd be okay with those skates through about Gamma. Once you get to Delta, you'll be working on 3-turns and your first "jump," bunny hops. You'll probably want a little better blade for 3-turns and more ankle support and a little larger toe pick for the bunny hops. I hear ya on the new skates!! Skating is expensive. My secret for keeping skating cost down a bit and keeping 3 of us in skates is eBay. Once you know your size/width, the ins and outs of the different brands of skates and blades and what boot or blade is appropriate for what level, you can shop around. When the time comes, get professionally fitted at a skate shop. They can tell you what boot and blade (or boot/blade set) would be best for your skill level, height, weight, etc. Sometimes they even have used skates there for sale. You don't necessarily have to buy them right then and there, but if you're armed with an idea of what to look for, you can look for deals. My mom still talks about how she just about died when she learned that in more advanced skates, boots and blades aren't sold together and they're VERY pricey....and that was probably close to 20 years ago!
If you get get away with finding used skates, usually mom and dad are a little bit more willing to help out. Or you can do what a lot of skaters do.....for Christmas, instead of making a list, they just ask for gift certificates for new skates!
Good luck!
