About how much would it cost to get set up for ice hockey?

I want to start playing ice hockey. About how much would it cost for the personal gear (stick, skates, pads, helmet, etc...) to start playing ice hockey. I am just looking for average price and name brands.

I second the recommendation for Play it Again Sports. If it is the wrong time of year they may not have much stuff though. Things you can get VERY BASIC : helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin pads, wooden stick. No need to get fancy at all on these. Experiment with stick length by buying a couple of sticks and cutting them off to different lengths. Make sure you bend your knees when you are out there on the ice, that will be a factor when you are sizing your stick. Things to UPGRADE : spend a little extra on gloves and hockey pants. If you get really cheap pants, and you skate hard the way you should, you will come home with bruises all over your hips. Finally, as everyone says, get a decent pair of new skates. They don't have to be amazing, but spend about $200 on them. Don't buy a pair that is too big for you, they will be smaller than your street shoes size. If they feel tight, take them to a hockey shop and get them power stretched. That will save you a lot of pain in your feet.

Then take a clinic that will teach you how to skate properly. Practice at public skate sessions. Get a FlyPuck and practice with it in the driveway, you will never get enough puck handling time when you are actually playing hockey. In a typical game you will have the puck for what, a minute or two over a 60 minute session? Not enough to improve. Buy a sheet of 1/4 inch plastic, and put it down in your driveway or on a tennis court. Get a dozen pucks and shoot wrist shots off it until your arms are strong and you get the feel of it. Then do snap shots and slap shots.

Do all of these things for 2 years and you'll be a decent hockey player.
