Why do they string the net so tightly in hockey?
In the old days the net was loose making it very obvious when a puck went in the net, nowadays they have to go to replay to see if pucks went in because they bounce out so fast.
A real reason not mentioned is that it keeps the game moving. The NHL has taken numerous steps to increase the speed of the game and this is one of them. Anyone who plays any hockey on loose strung nets will tell you how easy and often the puck will get trapped on the back of the net by the skirt. Then you have guys slashing at the back of the net to try and catapult the puck out of being trapped, and it doesn't always work.
The first time your team was in a mad scramble to score and the ref had to blow the play dead because of the puck got trapped in a sagging net, im sure you would wonder why they couldn't string the nets tighter so the puck would just roll off the back. It is frustrating at times to watch, but it is the smarter thing to do.
