why do the pittsburgh penguins not wear black and yellow like they used to?
The pittsburgh steelers and pittsburgh pirates wear black and yellow. The penguins used to wear black and yellow and they now wear black and an off yellow/gold
The Penguins were originally powder blue, and changed their colors to match the Pirates and the Steelers in 1980. In Pittsburgh, the colors of our sports teams have always been known as "Black and Gold", even though for most years the color has resembled yellow more than gold.
When the skating penguin logo was changed to the triangle shaped penguin head logo in 1992, a lot of people were angry. The color still resembled the yellow shade though, and not gold. When Lemieux bought team in 2002, he wanted to go back to the skating penguin, since he had liked it better. When he brought that logo back, he changed the yellow to a gold. He didn't want it to be exactly the same. This may have been symbolic of the team moving forward, and not looking back. We weren't the same team we were when we had the original skating penguin, but wanted to use that logo again since it was classic.
So the yellow was changed to what is called Vegas Gold. Still, in Pittsburgh, all the team colors are called "Black & Gold", regardless of different shades. The Pens frequently skate in the vintage powder blue jersey's as well, which came about after the Winter Classic game in 2008.
